PETROG & PetrogLite 6.0.2

Release date : 2026-05-20

PETROG

Fully compatible with Windows 11, and updated support for PostgreSQL (now supports v17)

Licencing - a new format (v3) PETROG licence key is required, extended to support licencing for add-on modules; subscription based and VirtualImageCam (i.e. using PETROG without a SteppingStage) now supported via additional S/VIC licence.

New licenced modules:

PetrogDownhole - PetrogDownhole introduces a powerful new downhole-plotting module within PETROG, enabling laboratories to visualise petrographic observations, measurements, and images directly in their geological depth context. It unifies existing PETROG datasets with imported well information—including casing points, lithostratigraphic tops, LAS curves, and other depth-referenced data—so that all relevant information can be plotted downhole with exceptional flexibility. PetrogDownhole provides extensive customisation of tracks, symbols, colours, scales, and annotations, along with high-quality printing and export options, making it a complete environment for producing publication-ready downhole plots that integrate seamlessly with PETROG’s petrographic workflows.

PetrogScan - PetrogScan is introduced as a major new module in PETROG that brings full support for modern slide-scanning workflows, allowing laboratories to integrate high-resolution whole-slide images directly into their petrographic analysis. It provides a unified interface for importing, viewing, navigating, and analysing scans from a wide range of slide-scanner systems, extending PETROG beyond live-camera microscopy into true digital-slide petrography. With PetrogScan, users can work seamlessly across stitched mosaics, Z-stacks, and multi-channel imagery, making PETROG a complete environment for both traditional microscope work and large-format digital petrography.

Wide range of standard and vendor-specific formats supported, including proprietary formats from market-leading slide scanners:

Simultaneous display of multiple views: polarisations, rotation angles, z-planes,  and/or others;

Coordinated pan-and-zoom of multiple simultaneous displays;

Magic Mouse™ for following boundaries visible in one polarisation view but not all;

Drill-down Mouse™ for better viewing of z-planes and showing direction of grain thickening.

New features

Sedimentary petrography - a general rock type of Clastic or Carbonate can be specified for a project, in order that appropriate options are then displayed during the project workflow.

Automatic "check for updates" option on start-up, the frequency of which is under user control (and can be switched off altogether if preferred).

Enhancements

VirtualImageCam:

can now create presets for brightness/gamma, which can be applied so as to replicate the application of similar properties in proprietary software to the raw data within the

proprietary whole slide image data files (e.g. in order to achieve the same level of brightness);

Added non-interpolated zoom controls for imported whole-slide images, allowing users to enlarge the display to better inspect fine features under the crosshairs. This zoom affects only the on-screen rendering (raw pixel data remains unchanged). While image sharpness naturally decreases above 100% display size, the enhancement improves usability when working with high-resolution slides containing very small structures.

new joypad for finer control of movement around the virtual sample.

XRD: workflow for importing XRD data is more user-friendly;

Spreadsheet reports: option to add colour coding to selected rows (to indicate min/max and spread in between, for a particular column)

Cameras

GTVision: extended the range of cameras supported, via integration of UVCHAM SDK (please ask for details on specific models of camera).

New Status bar reports frame rate, current size of frame etc. during logging

Performance improvements when resizing the image window;

Camera parameters: modified setting of enabled status of 'Apply' button so that this is only enabled when a genuine change to a parameter has been made;

the OK button is now captioned 'Close', and displays a warning if clicked when their are changes that have not yet been applied.

Olympus DP: fix to ensure that the live image format is properly initialised in the case where it has not been set previously (and saved to the registry) i.e. when running hardware ROI mode for the first time.

Jenoptik: fix so that zoom factors are now properly initialised on start-up

TIS: fix for crosshair calibration when hardware ROI is active

Zeiss: support for updated Zeiss AxioCam SDK v3.25

NnCam: support for updated NnCam SDK v59

SteppingStage

Improved version of SteppingStage joypad, with cleaner layout and reduced possibility of accidentally clicking "send to end of travel" when using the arrow controls (these are now separated out from the "small step" and "large step" controls)

Bug fixes

Textural logging: grain size display information now in the correct (selected) display units; now checks for zero length measurements (i.e. double clicks on the image window) and handles these so they are ignored rather than being treated as a skip.

Ternary diagrams: fix for discrepancy between displayed barycentric coordinates when hovering over the diagram, and the actual locations of defined polygon vertices; fix when accessing "Quan comp data edit" from ternary/QAPF diagrams (pop-up menu option); improvements and fixes to workflow for importing ternary diagram schemes from text files.

SlideExplorer: double-click on overview window now triggers a reset of the scroll bar positions to the centre, so that the double click results in moving to a new area defined by a rectangle with the click point in the centre.

PetrogLite

Enhancements:

Fully compatible with Windows 11.

Support for updated PVK applications (Windows and Android) that support Bluetooth connectivity in addition to Wi-Fi connection.

Improved version of SteppingStage joypad, with cleaner layout and reduced possibility of accidentally clicking "send to end of travel" when using the arrow controls (these are now separated out from the "small step" and "large step" controls).

Option to set an upper limit for travel in the y-direction (vertical axis), in order to be able to limit the potential for clashes with microscope objectives if necessary (dependant on the microscope and what objectives are available).

Improvements in the "About PetrogLite" window to information on operating system and licencing information (for PVK).
